The Nike Vaporfly 4 features a full-length ZoomX foam midsole paired with a carbon fiber Flyplate that runs from heel to toe with enhanced curvature through the midfoot and forefoot. The ride feels firmer and snappier than earlier Vaporfly versions, with noticeably more ground feel due to the reduced stack height. This setup delivers strong energy return and smooth transitions at uptempo paces, encouraging a quick cadence and efficient turnover. The shoe truly comes alive at faster speeds, where the responsive midsole and propulsive plate work together to drive forward momentum. At slower recovery paces, the platform can feel slightly wobbly and less forgiving, particularly through the rearfoot and midfoot. The lower profile and nimble character make the Nike Vaporfly 4 best suited for race day efforts and speed-focused workouts rather than easy mileage.

The upper consists of lightweight engineered mesh with laminated reinforcements around the lacing area and toe box for structure without excess weight. Breathability is excellent throughout, though the fit runs narrow and snug with a glove-like feel that works well for normal to narrow feet. The non-gusseted tongue features strategic padding at the instep to prevent lace bite, while the heel collar is moderately stiff with generous padding at the top. Some runners may experience initial pressure on the big toe from the reinforced toe box, though this typically relaxes after the first few runs. Racing eyelets allow for a runner's knot to enhance lockdown if needed. The carbon Flyplate provides a central guidance line that helps offset the narrow platform, though the shoe offers no traditional stability features and is designed strictly for neutral runners.

The outsole features minimal rubber coverage with exposed ZoomX foam visible through much of the rearfoot and midfoot, while the forefoot gets more substantial protection with a waffle-pattern rubber layout. This stripped-down design saves weight but raises durability questions, particularly on the exposed midsole foam. Traction performs well on dry roads and smooth pavement, but the Nike Vaporfly 4 struggles on non-paved surfaces, trails, or wet conditions where grip becomes unreliable.
