The HOKA Stinson 7 is a maximal cushioning road-to-trail hybrid running shoe designed for easy runs, recovery miles, and long slow distance training across mixed terrain. It features one of the tallest stack heights available in trail running footwear and prioritizes comfort and protection over speed.

The HOKA Stinson 7 is built on a compression-molded EVA midsole with an exceptionally high stack of 42mm in the heel and 37mm in the forefoot. The H-Frame technology uses two different densities of CMEVA foam arranged in a figure-eight pattern to create a stable cradle around the foot, while the Active Foot Frame allows the foot to sink into rather than perch on top of the cushioning. The ride is soft and plush with good responsiveness, though the EVA foam is somewhat firmer than nitrogen-infused alternatives. An Early Stage MetaRocker provides smooth transitions suited to easy paces and recovery running, though the significant weight limits versatility at faster speeds.

The upper features breathable engineered mesh with reinforced overlays and a protective toe cap. A padded, semi-gusseted tongue and generously cushioned heel counter provide comfort for long miles, while the overall fit runs true to size with a wider forefoot and lower volume profile. The secure midfoot lockdown and deep heel bucket seat contribute to the shoe's stable platform, making it suitable for runners seeking maximum support on varied terrain.

The HOKA Stinson 7 outsole uses Durabrasion rubber arranged in a zonal pattern with 4mm multidirectional lugs that balance trail grip with road durability. The lugs handle dirt, gravel, singletrack, and light mud adequately, though the design is not aggressive enough for technical descents or deep mud. Exposed foam sections in the midfoot reduce weight but limit traction in challenging conditions, making the shoe best suited for fire roads, light trails, and mixed road-to-trail routes rather than technical terrain.
