The ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28 is a premium daily training shoe designed for road running, targeted at runners prioritizing comfort and cushioning for long runs, easy mileage, and recovery days. This is the lightest Nimbus version ever produced, with a complete redesign that reduces weight while maintaining the plush, protective ride the series is known for.

The ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28 features an FF Blast Plus midsole with a PureGel insert in the rearfoot, delivering a cushioned, protective ride with zero ground feel thanks to its max-stack construction. The foam rides firmer and snappier than expected for a max-cushioned trainer, offering adequate shock absorption but below-average energy return, resulting in a flat, stable feel rather than a bouncy one. The pronounced heel bevel creates smooth rearfoot landings, while a late forefoot rocker aids forward propulsion. The ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28 handles easy runs and long runs comfortably and can accommodate uptempo efforts including marathon pace work, though it lacks the responsiveness for true speed sessions.

The upper uses an engineered knit material that is lighter and softer than the previous jacquard mesh, providing a luxurious feel with excellent heel lockdown. The semi-gusseted tongue is thin and stretchy, lying flat against the foot, while the plush heel collar offers comfort and secure hold. Breathability is limited due to the knit construction without clear ventilation holes, making the shoe better suited to cooler conditions. The fit runs true to size with a normal to slightly wide footprint, and the shoe offers strong stability for a neutral trainer thanks to its wide base, raised sidewalls, and stiff sole construction.

The ASICS GEL-NIMBUS 28 uses a hybrid ASICSGRIP outsole combining softer ASICSGRIP rubber on the forefoot with firmer AHAR rubber on the rearfoot, though overall rubber coverage is significantly reduced compared to earlier Nimbus versions. Deep flex grooves in the forefoot and rearfoot allow natural compression and aid flexibility. Traction is solid on dry pavement and performs well in wet and slushy conditions, while durability testing shows above-average wear resistance despite the minimal rubber coverage. The shoe is designed exclusively for road running.
