The Salomon S/LAB PHANTASM 3 is a carbon-plated road racing shoe designed for competitive runners targeting distances from 10K to marathon. Developed with aerodynamics experts to reduce air resistance, it prioritizes efficiency and speed at high paces.

The midsole features Salomon's optiFOAM+, a supercritical PEBA-based foam that delivers a soft, bouncy feel with strong energy return. A full-length carbon plate called energyBLADE provides stiffness and propulsion, particularly in the forefoot. The Salomon S/LAB PHANTASM 3 performs best at faster paces around 3:30 min/km and quicker, where the soft foam and stiff plate work efficiently together. The pronounced rocker geometry supports smooth transitions during tempo runs and race efforts, though at slower marathon paces the very soft midsole requires an active midfoot to forefoot landing style.

The upper features an aerodynamic gaiter-like construction that encloses the laces and wraps around the midfoot, creating a seamless profile to minimize air turbulence. This design provides a locked-in, precise fit. The upper combines a thin outer layer with engineered mesh, maintaining breathability despite the enclosed construction. The Salomon S/LAB PHANTASM 3 fits narrow and long, typical of Salomon's racing shoes, with a race-snug feel rather than daily trainer forgiveness.

The outsole uses Contagrip Road rubber compound with a flat profile that minimizes rolling resistance. Coverage is minimal with exposed midsole sections to reduce weight. The Salomon S/LAB PHANTASM 3 delivers excellent grip on dry asphalt and adequate traction on damp pavement, though it struggles on wet surfaces. Suitable exclusively for smooth road surfaces and not designed for rough or unpaved terrain.
