The midsole features Energy Foam, an EVA-based compound that delivers a moderately cushioned, responsive ride without excessive softness. The foam feels lively and bouncy underfoot with good propulsion on gravel and dirt, while the ActiveCHASSIS stability system adds subtle structural support through a medial wedge that becomes more noticeable on cambered terrain. The Salomon DRX Defy GRVL works well for easy daily runs and training paces on mixed surfaces, providing enough cushioning for comfortable mileage without feeling overbearing.

The upper uses a breathable 3D mesh construction with light overlays that secure the foot while maintaining a relaxed, generous fit compared to Salomon's typically snug trail models. Standard laces replace the brand's Quicklace system, and the padded tongue and heel collar add comfort, though the tongue lacks a gusset. The fit runs true to size with a roomy midfoot and forefoot, accommodating foot swelling on longer outings.

The Contagrip Road outsole features shallow 3mm lugs in a gravel bike tire-inspired pattern, designed to grip hardpack, dirt, gravel, and wet pavement reliably. The lugs provide confident traction on their intended surfaces and buffed trails, but the shallow depth and rubber compound struggle on muddy terrain and steep technical ground where deeper, more aggressive tread is needed.
