Built for fast-paced efforts on hard-packed dirt, groomed trails, and gravel roads, it combines high-stack cushioning with carbon-plated propulsion for runners seeking speed on mellow terrain.

The midsole features HOKA's ATPU-based foam with a 42mm stack in the heel and 36mm in the forefoot, delivering a responsive and energetic ride with strong rebound. An H-shaped carbon fiber plate sits between dual foam layers, providing stiffness and snappy transitions while maintaining some flex for varying terrain. The HOKA ROCKET X TRAIL uses aggressive rocker geometry with a beveled heel and sharp forefoot rocker to keep momentum rolling forward. The foam is firmer and more durable than PEBA-based compounds, offering a protective yet reactive feel best suited for uptempo runs, tempo efforts, and races from 10K to ultramarathon distances on smooth surfaces.

The upper is constructed from thin, breathable engineered mesh with structural overlays for lockdown and containment. A gusseted tongue with minimal padding prevents lace bunching, while the beefed-up heel counter and padded collar provide secure rearfoot hold. The fit runs approximately half a size small, with a tapered toebox and close, race-oriented feel throughout the midfoot. The mesh offers moderate stretch over time while maintaining structure on moderately technical terrain.

The outsole uses 3mm lugs strategically placed primarily in the forefoot and heel zones, with exposed foam sections to reduce weight and maintain flexibility. The tacky rubber compound grips well on gravel, packed dirt, and pavement in dry conditions, making the HOKA ROCKET X TRAIL versatile across roads and smooth singletrack. The shallow lugs and zonal coverage limit performance on steep, loose, muddy, or highly technical rocky terrain, where the high stack and wide platform can feel less stable.
