The HOKA Rocket X 3 features a dual-density PEBA foam midsole with a softer upper layer and firmer lower layer, paired with a full-length carbon fiber plate with lateral winglets. Stack heights measure 40mm in the heel and 33mm in the forefoot with a 7mm drop. The ride is smooth and stable rather than aggressively snappy, with a moderately rockered geometry that promotes fluid transitions from heel to toe-off. The carbon plate has a central slit that provides subtle flex while maintaining forward propulsion. This setup works best at marathon pace around 5:15 min/km and feels comfortable down to easier tempos around 6:00 min/km, though it's less optimized for shorter distances like 5K or 10K where maximum aggression is needed.

The single-layer engineered mesh upper is thin yet supportive, offering excellent breathability and quick-drying properties. The fit runs true to size but narrow, with a snug, secure lockdown throughout. A firmly padded ankle collar provides rearfoot security, while the thin tongue features broad wing-like sections that keep it centered without a gusset. The heel counter is moderately flexible with added structure.

The outsole consists of four separate sections of sticky rubber providing excellent traction on wet and dry road surfaces. Total rubber thickness measures around 2.4mm, offering more coverage than typical super shoes for improved durability, though some exposed midsole foam in the midfoot can show wear on rough pavement.
