The midsole features a dual-density construction with a supercritical EVA top layer paired with a compression-molded EVA bottom layer in the forefoot. This layering delivers a smooth, cushioned ride with notable energy return and responsiveness despite the shoe's substantial build. A TPU plate called Rocker Integrity Technology sits between the foam layers in the forefoot, maintaining the shape of the moderately aggressive rocker throughout the shoe's life and providing structural support. The HOKA MAFATE 5 handles steady paces on long trail outings well, though the soft heel foam and high stack may cause occasional lateral tipping for heavy heel strikers.

The warp knit upper offers improved breathability compared to earlier versions, with strategic overlays and a dynamic vamp ensuring a secure and accommodating fit.
